A Silver Lining to Transforming School Nutrition in Nepal

A Silver Lining to Transforming School Nutrition in Nepal

Nestled in the town of Ramechhap District, Manthali Secondary School is quietly leading one of the most inspiring school nutrition transformations in Nepal. Since 2018, what began as a modest school-based bakery project (Smartbakery) has grown into a full-fledged, nutritious meal program's 'last-mile’ delivery, fueling not just hungry bellies, but healthier habits and brighter futures.

At the heart of this transformation lies bold, visionary leadership. The school administration didn’t wait for top-down reform. They acted. In a context where mid-day meals in many public schools in Nepal are resource-limited to staple grains, Manthali made a pivotal shift: introducing freshly baked, locally made products as staples in school lunches. This one decision addressed multiple challenges at once: school performance, food quality, safety, nutritional value, cost efficiency, and community resilience.

But this wasn’t just a kitchen upgrade. It was a school-wide shift in mindset.

School leadership restructured responsibilities, integrated nutrition awareness into school planning, and secured support from the parents and the school management committee. A government-dedicated school nurse, along with schoolteachers, served as frontline nutrition advocates, ensuring hygiene and tracking student well-being. Teachers weren’t just informed, they became champions of the mission.

Smartbakery itself evolved into a hub for local food innovation. From testing multigrain recipes to incorporating seasonal and surplus fruits and vegetables, eggs, and dairy, it became a space where food, education, and community met. Staff gained hands-on skills, and other schools began to take notice.

In 2025, the school stepped even further by now working with local communities and private sector partners to integrate minimally processed, fruit-based products, such as apple purees and fruit blends, into traditional school meals like apple haluwa (apple, semolina, coconut pudding), pumpkin breads, rice porridge, eggs, etc. These additions make lunches more flavorful, more nutrient-rich, and significantly reduce fuel and cooking time (less than 30 minutes).

This is more than a menu tweak. It’s a smart systems shift. By lightening the labor burden on community women, boosting nutritional value, and sourcing from local produce, the school is supporting its students and the entire community generate economic, social, and health value—all from within, while doing so, setting an example as a champion for over 20 public schools, as well as the municipalities.

This model shows how school meals can improve food quality, ensure consistent safety, empower local women, strengthen local food markets, and build a model hub that can scale across the country without dependence on imports or complex logistics.

This is the power of resilient local food systems. Transformation doesn’t have to come from the outside. It can, and does, rise from within. Manthali Secondary School is a living proof that the answers we need may already be in our own communities.

A New Chapter: Full Care for Students Without Parental Support

Manthali Secondary School has taken yet another courageous step. Today, it aims to serve as a full-time home for over 100 students across theRamechhap district without family support and parental care, offering not only quality education, but safe accommodation, nutritious meals, and a supportive environment.

These students, many of whom would face hunger and educational exclusion, now have stability, safety, and the chance to thrive. This has been made possible through a growing network of local partnerships, including support from Mandala Foods, which provides fruit-based nutrition, logistics, and technical assistance.

Together, the school and Mandala Foods are building a model rooted in community, compassion, and smart local solutions.

This is your chance to step in. For just ~$70-100per child per year, contributed directly to the school, you can help ensure that every child—regardless of their background—has access to meals, shelter, and the education they deserve.
